Depth of field (DoF) in photography can be elusive. It is about defining a boundary of focus around your subject(s) to capture the essence of your image. It is easy to see but hard to master.

When looking at a photo DoF involves subject distance from lens, focal point and aperture size. It is related to the amount of the subject that is in sharp focus.

A good way to visualize this is to imagine a vertical plane parallel to where you are standing. Then rotate the object and the plane to the side so you can see them from the side.

Now make a determination how far in front of and behind the subject you want to get. That front and rear limit is the depth of field. By the way the vertical plane is called the focal plane, the plane where you focus the camera.

In the photo above you can see that the depth of field is infinite. Meaning that everything in front of and behind the house is in sharp focus. The focal plane is the house.

Photo lamination is an alternative to traditional framing. Laminate your photo to keep out dust, air and molds. Preserves a photo much better than traditional wood and glass framing. It is not well known but worth considering.

Lamination supplies can be found at your local Target. You can buy prefinished wood or finish the wood yourself.

A good example to laminate your photo is to first layer behind the photo acid-free paper. Then behind that a thin piece of wood to give structure. The wood can be of any shape. Layer all together and laminate. Then you can hang it up your wall, preserved forever.

You can be creative by mounting the laminated photo on a larger piece of polished wood to give it a more elegant look.

There are many factors that go into taking a fine art photograph. It is not just about the subject. It involves the colors, depth of field, focus, subject clarity and emotion. There are many other factors, and not all at play in each photo. It could be a photo depicting a social event, wildlife, children, etc. They carry a theme, a focus.

For example in the Animalia exhibit, the juror Karen Irvine submitted the following statement on the exhibit:

“In selecting works for Animalia, I was interested in finding artists whosephotographs comment insightfully on the complicated relationship between humans andanimals. Human beings enjoy, care for, utilize, and exploit animals. Many of the imagesin this exhibition provide views of nature that form a compelling counterpoint tocontemporary human existence by offering glimpses into the amazing world of animalbeauty, instinct and vulnerability. Some of the pictures provide a sober reminder of ourdomination and encroachment on the environments on which animals depend to survive.”

In this photo submitted by Carol Walker, the subject(s), being the giraffes, are in focus. It depicts a mother and her newborn touching lips. The colors are true and depict their natural environment. You can see a piece of the umbilical cord still attached to the baby giraffe. It is a loving photo that shows a very tender moment being shared between a mother and her child. As a mother I can relate to the photo very well.

Karen goes on to say that:

“One strong theme of the exhibition is consumption. There are photographs thatreveal not only how we use the physical bodies of animals, but also how we employ their image in the service of advertising and art. Some of the pictures depict animals and howthey are used to entertain us at museums and zoos, as well as informally in our homes andbackyards. We befriend and love some animals; revile and kill others.”

What is clear is that all these photos were created using the technical skills and knowledge of photography. The subject of attention is always in focus, whether anything else is or not. If there are eyes present, the focus is on those.
